The leaves of Metha Paya (Paaya,മെത്ത പായ, Screw Pine mat) have been traditionally used to make numerous household articles such as mats, storage bags, baskets etc. These products have been well known and popular for their quality and elegant appearance.
Methapaya are available in various types and sizes - full size sleeping mats, long ones for sitting, meditation mats etc; and these were popular owing to their ease of availability, reasonable price and superior quality.
These are also used for meditation or worship, as it has been believed not to sit on plain floor while meditating or worshipping. This is done with the view to avoid direct contact with the Earth, to prevent loss of spiritual energy (as in earthing of electrical circuits).
