Cloves are an aromatic spice which is extensively used in cuisines all over the world. It is used to flavour meat dishes, vegetable curries, marinades and in certain fruit dishes. Aromatic influence of this spice is long been used, often flavours hot beverages and recipes involving lemon and sugar. Oil extracted from cloves has a numbing sensation and is used by dentists for treating tooth aches. Since ancient times, people used to hold crushed cloves in their mouth to alleviate tooth pain. Antiseptic qualities and its unique flavour made it one of an important ingredient in mouth washes and toothpastes.
